Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) and Buddhism both associate the sound of the conch shell, or shankha, with the beginning of something significant because it represents lustre, brilliance, purity, and an auspicious beginning. It is used in all religious rituals and is regarded as a pious object.
Sankha plays a significant role in Vaishnavite symbolism. The Panchajanya of Lord Vishnu is the most well-known Shankha. The Bhagavad Gita makes reference to Lord Krishna and the five Pandavas having different Shankhas in the Mahabharata.
