Sambalpuri textiles showcase the Baandha distinctive handmade style. Historically, artisans would use geometric patterns or pictures of plants or animals to create Baandhas. Newer versions of the Baandha are being designed that show portraits, landscapes, and flower pods. Tie-dye is used to manufacture the fabric used in baandha. To stop dye from absorbing, the yarns are tied in the desired patterns before being dyed. The yarns created in this manner are referred to as “Baandha” yarns or a set of yarns. The distinctive quality of this type of designing is that the patterns are nearly exactly reflected on both sides of the fabric. The fabric cannot ever be bleached to a different colour after it has been coloured.
