The appliqué work produced at Pipli Crafts Village, which is 40 km from Bhubaneswar, is among the most vibrant handicrafts in all of Odisha. The skill, known as Chandua locally, is connected to the rites and customs of Lord Jagannath, his brothers Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, as well as other deities. Although the evolution and beginning of appliqué work are unknown, it is thought to have begun in the 17th and 18th centuries when clothing and decorative items were used in religious processions at the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
