Sambalpuri fabrics are inspired by the Baandha craft style. Traditionally, Baandhas were made with images of flora and fauna or with geometrical patterns. New types of Baandha depicting portrait, landscape, and flower pods have recently[when?] been designed. The tie-dye technique is used to create Baandha fabric. The yarns are tied in the desired patterns to prevent dye absorption before being dyed. ‘Baandha’ refers to the yarns or set of yarns produced in this manner. The distinctive feature of this type of design is that the designs are almost identically reflected on both sides of the fabric. Once dyed, the fabric can never be bleached to a different colour.
