A Sambalpuri saree is a conventional handwoven bandha (ikat) sari (privately called “sambalpuri bandha” sadhi or saree) wherein the twist and the weft are splash-colored prior to winding around. It is created in the Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Boudh and Sonepur areas of Odisha, India. The sari is a conventional female piece of clothing in the Indian subcontinent comprising of a portion of unstitched material going from four to nine meters long that is hung over the body in different styles.
Sambalpuri saris are known for their consolidation of conventional themes like shankha (shell), chakra (wheel), phula (blossom), all of which have profound imagery with the local Odia variety red highly contrasting address genuine Odia Culture alongside Ruler Kaalia (Jagannatha’s) face tone, yet the highpoint of these saris is the customary craftsmanship of the ‘Bandhakala’, the Splash-color workmanship reflected in their multifaceted winds around, otherwise called Sambalpuri “Ikkat”. In this procedure, the strings are first creatively colored and later woven into a texture, with the whole cycle requiring numerous weeks. These saris initially became famous external the state when the late State head Indira Gandhi began wearing them. During the 1980s and 1990s they became well known across India. To give security to the weavers rehearsing this craftsmanship, the handloom silk saris produced in Sambalpur and Berhampur (Berhampur Patta) in Odisha were remembered for the Public authority of India’s Geological Signs vault.
